We frequently get questions about our name, and we wanted you to know its story. The term "Moonlight" was born with a Senator's prophesy that, "in this conflict, the sun has set on peace." Sitting in the back of the Senate hearing room, our founder resolved that some problems are worth a second, third, or hundredth look, even if others believe the sun has set on them. "Metrics" comes from a story dear to the founder's father. 30 years before baseball legend Bill James' success would turn into a book called "Moneyball" and 31 years before he would help the Boston Red Sox win their first world series in 86 years, the night-shift security guard started down a paththat would revolutionize the game he loved. James realized that by tracking statistics nobody else thought to measure, he could unearthed new approaches to "unsolvable" problems. Built for his Society of American Baseball Researchers (SABR), he called the strategy "Sabermetrics." At Moonlight, our goal is to apply sabermetrics' approach to problems upon which the sun has seemingly set.
